Early Cavities

How to Avoid Them

Share Story on:

Early Cavities
Children need healthy and strong baby teeth for many reasons such as chewing food and keeping space in the jaw for adult teeth to erupt. The early loss of a baby tooth can mean that the surrounding teeth may move into the empty space thus leaving inadequate space for adult teeth to emerge. It is best practice to take your little one for a visit to the dentist around the time you see their first tooth come in.
Avoiding Decay
You need to ensure that your child’s baby teeth are protected as soon as they appear at around six months. Baby Bottle Tooth Decay or Early Childhood Caries (cavities) is the term for decaying of the teeth in infants. Decay of this kind has to be caught early, or better still, prevented before it gets so bad that the teeth have to be removed.

The great news is that tooth decay is almost entirely preventable. Following simple rules such as not sharing saliva with your baby through licking pacifiers or feeding spoons which you give to your baby can reduce the likelihood of decay. Also, wiping your baby’s gums after eating will remove old food morsels and plaque. Brushing their new little teeth gently with a baby toothbrush and water will also help. There are numerous tips and hints which your dentist will be more than happy to share with you and which will benefit your kids’ well into the future.
Tooth Decay Factors
There are obvious factors with regards to tooth decay. These include, too many sweets, prolonged exposure to fruit juices and sweetened water, dipping pacifiers in honey or other sweet liquids and many more. What aspects which can lead to tooth decay and which are not as well known are transferring saliva from parent to child – the caregiver can pass cavity-causing bacteria to the baby. Also infants who do not intake enough fluoride are more susceptible to tooth decay.
