Talk to Your Child About Cavities
Psychologists say that a child‘s habits are generally formed by the age of five years old. This is why pediatric dentists agree it’s important to start early on teaching proper dental care. Even a toddler can get involved in a routine mouth care regimen. This is the perfect time to teach your child about cavities, and prevention really is the best method! Cavities are caused by plaque, a slimy substance made up of sugars and starches that mix with the natural bacteria in the mouth. The plaque eats away at the tooth, causing painful cavities that will have to be fixed. It is no problem for a child to understand that brushing his teeth will help to ‘wash’ these plaque germs away.
When the deed is done
For some children, though, the dreaded cavity eventually comes. When this happens, there are further discussions you should have. Tell your child in simple, non-frightening terms what she can expect. The dentist will likely take pictures of her mouth (an x ray). Remind her that pictures don’t hurt. The dentist may put a special medicine in her mouth to make it numb, so that the filling won’t hurt. Lastly, the dentist will clean out the cavity and fill it up with a special ‘filling’, so that the cavity doesn’t spread and rot the tooth.
Encourage good habits
There are ways to encourage children to get involved in their own tooth care. A few easy and affordable ways are allowing them to choose their own ADA approved toothbrush and toothpaste. And remember, children often follow what they see modeled, so be a good example and brush your teeth alongside your child. You can save worries and ease fears by talking to your kids about cavities!
